Whatchya watchin’?

I love people in social settings that say, “Oh, I never watch television,” then in the next breath start reeling off a dozen or so of their favorite shows.

I admit it, the TV was my babysitter as a kid.

“Go watch television!” mom would say when we we’re getting on her nerves.

But growing up, we had three TV networks to choose from.

So, we were at the mercy of broadcast programmers and what they thought we should watch.

But that was then, and this is now – as they say.

In 2014, the choices are endless; from broadcast to cable and satellite to video streaming services that offer a 12-part series all at once. One of my favorite shows currently is ABC’s “Modern Family.” Have you guys seen this show? It’s a constant giggle, not one generated by a canned laugh track, but genuine guffaws. This show has won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series five years running, and deservedly so. And by the way, I’m not alone when it comes to “Modern Family.” Sharon said, “I watch it and record it to watch it again and even watch the reruns that are airing now. The show makes me laugh out loud – something we all need to do daily.”

OK, now on to my loyal Facebook peeps and their favorite TV shows.

Jeff wrote, “Binge watch ‘House of Cards’ on Netflix, cause they release a full season at once and it’s awesome.” Lots of folks agree.

Connie said, “We stream basics. For movies we use Netflix. No DVR, we are just not big on television.”

DVR’s are big, too.

From Mary Beth, “‘Once Upon a Time,’ ‘Big Bang Theory,’ all of the ‘NCIS,’ series, ‘Hawaii 5-0,’ and if it weren’t for DVR, I couldn’t watch any of them!”

My media friends chimed in with their faves.

Gina from the MIX 107.7 Morning Show wrote, “‘Orange is the New Black’ on Netflix. Great acting, unique setting, new themed show unlike anything else on TV.”

Radio Hall-of-Famer Kim Faris said, “I love watching any live sporting event. Especially baseball, football and basketball. I rarely watch a network show live. I love ‘Castle,’ ‘New Girl,’ ‘The Mindy Project’ and ‘Nashville.’”

VP/GM of FOX 45-ABC 22 Lisa Barhorst shared her must-see TV choices: “The whole family loves ‘The Middle’ and ‘Modern Family.’ We also DVR ‘The Big Bang Theory’ in syndication.” Lisa would never watch new episodes of CBS’ ‘Big Bang Theory,’ locally on channel 7, she’s not allowed to.

My buddy Doreen from MIX 107.7 has a few favorites: “DVR everything so no breaks, daytime ‘General Hospital’/‘The Young and the Restless.’ Evenings, ‘Castle,’ ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ ‘Under the Dome,’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘The Middle,’ ‘Modern Family.’ The only TV we watch in real time is anything on HGTV.”

Suzanne is old school: “We DVR most of the shows we watch. We actually enjoy ‘Night Court,’ ‘Murphy Brown,’ ‘Gunsmoke,’ ‘Diagnosis Murder,’ ‘Andy Griffith,’ ‘Matlock’ and so on. Every day I do watch ‘Dr. Phil.’ The reason being is he keeps his guests in check and I get something out of the show that helps me in my daily life.”

Ron said, “All ‘NCIS’ shows, ‘Big Bang Theory,’ ‘Jeopardy,’ ‘The Young and the Restless,’ ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Criminal Minds.’ We have cable, DVR everything. Oh! Almost forgot ‘The Simpsons.’”

My buddy Melissa, who works for DATV (Dayton Access Television on Time Warner Cable in Dayton, and where yours truly got his start in the biz), wrote, “I have to say DATV first of course, ‘Resurrection,’ ‘Food Network,’ ‘The Chew,’ ‘Rachel Ray,’ ‘The Good Wife,’ ‘Chicago Fire’ and ‘Chicago P.D.,’ ‘Dateline,’ ‘20/20,’ ‘BB,’ Football and hockey. And we DVR all of these in case we miss, but TWC should allow [you] to record more than two DVR shows at a time like UVerse does.”

It sounds like the Time Warner complaint department should expect a call …

Cindy uses all platforms available: “We always watch ‘Revenge’ live, or later that night. ‘Suits’ on iTunes. ‘Scandal’ on Netflix, ‘Castle’ and ‘The Good Wife’ on DVR.”

And my good neighbors Linda and Joe chimed in with their top pick, “We enjoy ‘Blue Bloods’ on Friday nights. It is the one show we try to be home and watch together.”

But my favorite comment by far is from Dave, who was a former producer at Channel 2: “Old ‘2 News at Sunrise’ episodes, complete with Bucher’s Beat!”

Wow, who knows what might come next; a Buch Channel? All Buch all the time?

Or maybe not …

Happy viewing my friends.
